A sociologist looking to understand the vast diversity of species that cohabitate the fashion kingdom would do well to observe the audience at a Carolina Herrera show.

At Mrs. Herrera’s show on Monday morning in Lincoln Center, there was Renée Zellweger in a gray form-fitting dress with her legs side-crossed in such a manner as to suggest she was performing a new form of yoga in her seat. On the other end of the spectrum was Nicki Minaj, wearing a tunic made of hundreds of neon puffballs that made her look like a large gumball machine. Compounding the absurdity of this image was the fact that Ms. Minaj was seated between Stefano Tonchi and Anna Wintour.

Susan Tabak, a sort of perennial presence in fashion, though I’ve never really understood her precise role (socialite? blogger?), stopped by to ask if I’d heard that she now has her own perfume. Of course I had, since she and her publicists had sent me at least three e-mails. It is called Sortir le Soir, which I would loosely translate as I Go Out a Lot at Night. But I was more fascinated by her fake eyelashes, which appeared to be an inch long, and her dress, vintage Ungaro, though sadly not from the Lindsay Lohan collection.

“Ungaro,” she said. “E-man-uel Ungaro.”

Mrs. Herrera, meanwhile, was also thinking of rare birds for her spring collection, which included some pretty, pretty prints of sparrows in canary yellow and robin red, and dresses with embroideries that appeared sometimes as squiggle marks, sometimes in grids or stripes that with their silvery palette looked a little Art Deco.

In an unrelated note, and maybe the pace of Fashion Week is getting to me, but on my way out of the show, I would swear I heard a young woman ask the security guard, “Could you tell me how to get to Eileen Fisher Hall?”

This week’s challenge on “Project Runway” was to create an “avant-garde look” based on a piece of artwork the designers would collaborate on with young students from the Harlem School of the Arts.

After the paintings had been completed – everything from flowers to abstract shapes to moody self-portraits – the contestants gathered in the workroom to start on their sketches, soberly reminding one another that avant-garde designs could easily cross over into the costume category.

Clearly, they had been avid watchers of previous seasons of “Project Runway,” when similar challenges had been held and many a talented designer had stumbled. After all, there is a fine line between “avant-garde” and “hot mess.”

And hot mess is what we mostly got Thursday night.

Let’s start with Bert, shall we? Bert is the 57-year-old Seventh Avenue veteran who had all but dropped out of the business because of his problems with alcohol. (And though now sober, Bert seems to have lost none of the cantankerousness that must have been a pleasure for friends to endure in his drinking days.) Up until now, his outfits have been mostly variations on the Little Black Dress – nicely designed, well-constructed, but “safe,” as Heidi Klum would put it.

This time, Bert decided to “break out of the box,” as designers are quick to say. He created a pair of pants – though “pants” probably doesn’t aptly describe the odd-fitting, ballooned-shaped outfit in prison-cell gray, complete with appliqués of what looked like random household objects scattered around the shoulder and neckline. They were, Bert explained later, based on the geometric shapes in the painting created by his student partner, the 16-year-old Antonio.

In the workroom, a clearly puzzled Tim Gunn walked over to Bert and asked him what he was up to. “This is not expected of you,” said Tim. “I hope that’s a good thing,” responded Bert. The glum, disbelieving look on young Antonio’s face suggested otherwise.

The judges were, predictably, taken aback by the look when it was presented on the runway. One guest judge, Zanna Roberts Rassi from Marie Claire (filling in for Nina Garcia, who was at the couture shows in Paris when this episode was taped in July) said, “I don’t feel like it’s a garment anyone would want to wear.” The other guest judge, the designer Kenneth Cole, was matter-of-fact: “I just don’t get it.”

But Bert was thrown a surprising lifeline by Heidi: “It’s cuckoo,” she said. “But it didn’t bore me.” Too many other designs, she said, were “sad” and “drab.”

Exhibit A: Olivier, an early front-runner in the race to Fashion Week who seems to be fading fast, a development that clearly bewilders Heidi. “I was blown away at the casting,” by Olivier’s work, she said during the judge’s deliberations.

“And now you’re bored to tears,” Michael Kors responded. “It’s Valium clothes,” Michael said of Olivier’s boring, drapey, muted dress. “You want to fall asleep.”

But, like Anthony Ryan the week before, the judges seemed to spare Olivier elimination, despite the awfulness of the outfit before them, because they saw promise in his earlier work and thought he deserved a second chance.

This week, Anthony Ryan made the most of his reprieve. His elegant, well-fitted chiffon dress seemed to be made of brush strokes painted on the model’s body. “I love this dress,” said Heidi, who had been scathing of his work the week before. “She looks sexy. She looks modern.”

Anthony Ryan was voted the winner.

And then there was Joshua Christensen, who had actually been voted off earlier in the season, but then brought back when another contestant unexpectedly dropped out.

Oh, but why? Josh C. had been in the bottom three in every previous challenge he had participated in, and this was no exception.

“I don’t think this is avant-garde,” pronounced Michael as he surveyed Josh C.’s outfit of black shorts, high-necked white blouse and odd leatherlike fabric covering the model’s shoulder blades. “She looks like a Victorian cocktail waitress in Las Vegas.”

“My first thought was ‘trashy,’” chimed in Zanna, while Heidi provided the death knell: “First thing I was thinking: I’m going to be a hooker for Halloween.”

So it was “auf” yet again to Josh C. Hopefully for the last time.

Black is another safe color but it can be a bit boring at times. Also, deep browns with black during the warmer months make you feel stuffy too. However, if you want to try out some hues you can opt for a florescent pink or tomato red shirt; think Ross from the sitcom “Friends”.

You can experiment with a classic polo neck in hues of beige or white. Contrasting shades of orange with brown or cream stripes adds some color to your wardrobe. Avoid round necks with corduroys as they are really understate this classy and wearable style.
